What Nobody Tells You About Your First €1,000,000

2 min readMoney, Business Building

I used to think the first €1,000,000 in revenue would feel like an arrival. It didn't. It felt like the moment the questions got harder, not easier — because now there was something real to protect, and protecting it turned out to be a completely different skill than building it.

Revenue is not the number that matters

Nobody warns you how little a big top-line number tells you about whether your business is actually healthy. The number that changed how I slept was never revenue — it was how many months I could survive if my biggest customer left tomorrow.

The milestone changes your risk tolerance, quietly

Before the milestone, every decision felt like upside: what's the best case if this works? After it, I noticed myself asking a different question without meaning to: what's the worst case if this breaks something I've already built? That shift is natural, and it's also dangerous if you don't name it — it's how founders who once moved fast start moving cautiously for the wrong reasons.

What actually mattered more than the number

  • Who I built it with. The milestone belonged to a small group of people, not to me alone, and treating it that way mattered more than I expected.
  • What I learned about my own limits. Money problems became people-and-systems problems long before they became money problems again.
  • How boring the "secret" turned out to be. Consistency, unglamorous follow-through, and saying no to good-enough opportunities to protect great ones.

If you're chasing a number like this one, chase it. Just don't expect it to answer the questions you think it will. It mostly just changes which questions you're allowed to ask next.
